Things to Consider while Choosing the Right Toothbrush

For many of us, selecting a toothbrush is as simple as inhaling oxygen. But are all toothbrushes the same?

Do we need to pay attention while selecting any toothbrush?

Just as you cannot underestimate the power of good oral hygiene, similarly, you cannot understand the power of a perfect toothbrush.

But, wait. How to select the perfect one? Nowadays, most of the stores sell toothbrushes with a vast variety– manual or electric with straight or round bristles. So, how do you go about selecting the right toothbrush?

Suggested Factors To Consider While Choosing The Right Toothbrush-

Toothbrush Head:

Before selecting any toothbrush, remember that small toothbrush heads are better and effective compared to large ones. These small heads can easily penetrate the corners and reach out to the sides of molars for efficient cleaning.

However, there’s no one-fits-all size. It is recommended to see your respective dentists to select a perfect toothbrush that goes right with the size and is easy to grip too!

Toothbrush Filaments or Bristles:

Toothbrush filaments are available in three forms – soft, medium, and hard. Toothbrushes with hard bristles are abrasive. It can damage the tooth enamel and make them sensitive.

Always choose soft bristles for oral cleaning because it won’t cause any collateral damage. It is quite often the best approach.

ADA Approved:

Always look for an ADA seal while buying any toothbrush. This seal signifies –

  • A toothbrush is thoroughly tested and examined and the brush heads have through clinical trials too
  • The handle is strong and durable and can be recommended for daily use
  • Bristles have safe tips and won’t draw off frequently from the toothbrush

Rounded VS Straight Bristles:

Have you ever noticed the tip of your toothbrush bristle? It comes into different forms – rounded and straight. At once, you may ignore the shape of the bristle, but, in a real sense, it has a huge impact on your oral health.

Straight bristles and rounded bristles both are good in terms of oral cleaning. However straight bristles do more harm than good because they have sharp and jagged tips. This can further increase the chances of inflammation and infection.

How often should I replace my toothbrush?

Your toothbrush is the first line of guard against bacteria and germs and bad breath. Therefore you should be proactive towards changing your toothbrush to protect your teeth from cavities and gum problems.

Ideally, you should replace your toothbrush after every three months or when it begins to show wear.
